Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and the second largest city in the state after Charlotte. Raleigh makes up one of the key cities in the “Triangle” region, marking one the eastern-most anchor of the Research Triangle Park. The “RTP” is collection of high-tech, research and bio-engineering employers bordered by Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

Raleigh is called the city of oaks, because of the large number of oak trees in the community. The city’s flag and seal both feature an oak tree.

Raleigh is in the top 50 cities in the United States in population. The 2008 US Census Bureau estimates the population at nearly 400,000. The Raleigh-Cary Metropolitan area was named the fastest growing Metropolitan area in the United States from 2007-2008.

The city was founded in 1792 and named for Sir Walter Raleigh, the English explorer and aristocrat.

The National Climatic Data Center registers Raleigh’s average temperature in January as 51ºF / 32ºF and in August 89ºF / 69ºF
