Relocating to Raleigh With Children

Relocating to a new area can be tough on children of all ages. Whether you're the parent of a newborn, school-aged child, or a teenager, you probably have a few questions about how you can make your next move as easy as possible. With the right resources, moving to an area like Raleigh can actually be an exciting experience for your child, and we have a few tips to help you navigate the big transition!

Relocation Tips for Kids

Start far in advance

Regardless of your child's age, it's best to tell them about your relocation as far in advance as possible. Older children might have a negative reaction, especially if they'll have to leave their friends and school behind. However, explaining the situation gives them time to process the upcoming transition and ask plenty of questions. If you have a toddler, try using visuals to explain your upcoming move.

Let your kids get involved

It's easy to get caught up with packing and finding a new home—the last thing you want is for your child to feel left out of the moving process. Younger children can assist you by packing their room or sorting through their toys to decide what they want to keep. Older kids and teens can take a more active role by running a garage sale or even attending showings. Let your child know that you value their opinion throughout every step of the process, and be sure to answer any questions.

Give them time to say goodbye

If you're relocating to the Triangle, your child will probably have to leave behind their friends, school, sports teams, and other hobbies. While it's important to be optimistic about the move, give your child ample time to say goodbye to their old home. This can involve having a class party, writing notes to friends and teachers, and taking them to some of their favorite places one last time. Your child can also keep in touch with their friends via FaceTime, texting, emailing, and social media.

Stick to a routine

For younger children and infants, sticking to a routine can help make a big relocation a bit easier. To do this, try keeping their schedule as normal as possible. If they have a set nap or mealtime, don't change it during the move. Once you're settled in, you can incorporate some familiar activities from your old home, like signing them up for hobbies or sports and enrolling in a play group.

Introduce them to the area

After moving, spend some time exploring Raleigh with your kids. The Triangle is a fun and exciting place for children of all ages, and we have everything from parks and museums to sports teams and rec centers. If possible, have your child visit their new school in advance, or let them pick out an activity that they want to try. The more they get to know the area, the more at-home they'll feel!
